Prospectus: History and Philosophy of Transubstantiation

One of the seven sacraments, Eucharist, is an activity of taking in consecrated bread and wine, which literally become the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. This miraculous event is explained in the doctrine of transubstantiation. According to this theory, the accidental properties of the bread and wine (colour, smell, taste, and shape, etc…) remain […]

Otaku Culture Explained, or What I Mean by “Otaku”

It has come to my attention that I may need to define what I mean by “Otaku” when I use it to criticize those who are Otaku minded. I distinguish three types of people I might call Otaku. The first type refers to Otaku used in Western culture, the second refers to, though less commonly, […]

The Machiavellian Hobbesian Orwellian World: Political Sociology of Japanese Culture

As many of you know, I have been engaged with somewhat amateur debates about the recent Japanese girls only singer groups AKB48 and its cognates. You can read about what they are and how precisely I think they need to be closely monitored at my previous blog entries. Today, I am here to discuss about […]

AKB48 – Sexual Exploitation of Pre-Teen Girls in Japanese Pop-Culture

I have written an article about the basic structure of AKB48 and its exploitative method for objectifying young women for public entertainment. Since then, I have created a Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/groups/222928411085497) and also a Facebook page (h

AKB48 – The Paramount Example of Sexism in the World of 1984

“The privileged place held by men in economic life, their social usefulness, the prestige of marriage, the value of masculine backing, all this makes women wish ardently to please men. Women are still, for the most part, in a state of subjection. It follows that woman sees herself and makes her choices not in accordance […]

The Enquiry into the Nature of Zombies and Their Alleged Cannibalistic Character

Can zombies run? This is one of the many questions that one may come across when watching any zombie films. For, on the one hand, if their flesh is rotten, rapid motion would be impossible, but on the other hand, if their flesh is not rotten, most of the depictions about zombies in films would […]

Virtue Ethics in Children’s Literature – The Adventure with Frog and Toad Are Friends

“Style itself makes its claims, expresses its own sense of what matters. Literary form is not separable from philosophical content, but is, itself, a part of content – an integral part, then, of the search for and the statement of truth.”[1] – Martha C. Nussbaum Probably, the most celebrated work among all the children’s stories […]

Aristotle’s Conception of Carnivorous Plants as Animals

(What follows is an excerpt from my paper for PHIL481: Aristotle’s Invention of Biology, lectured by Professor Falcon) Having briefly spoken of the ways in which plant life differs from animal life in both nutrition and reproduction, let us now proceed to the discussions of so called ‘borderline cases’ for Aristotle. For these illustrate interesting […]

Response to Akane (on the book “Where ‘we’ are going”, etc.) [Japanese]
